Our History

When Punja Kara left India for Fiji in 1917, he had little money but a lot of ambition. It all began when Punja Kara started his new life in Fiji as a hawker of simple jewellery. After a decade of hard work, he managed to start a small country store in Cuvu, near Sigatoka in 1935.

Punja Kara was a man of principals with strong family values and had deep respect for everyone. He was a man dedicated towards the well-being of his family, employees and every one around him.

In 1958, together with his sons, he laid the foundation for Punja & Sons in Lautoka. The business grew at a remarkable pace, offering customers the widest possible choice of products and a firm assurance of quality with every item sold.

His belief in the future led him to venture into the wholesale, trading, marketing and distribution of essential basic consumer goods. Progressively he ventured into manufacturing of these goods.

His legacy is encompassed today in Punja & Sons Ltd, a diverse and expanding enterprise with interests in manufacturing, processing, packaging, printing, distribution, imports and exports.

Today, the fruits of his entrepreneurial efforts are visible in the wide range of products that Punja & Sons manufactures, markets and distributes. Not just in Fiji, but in neighbouring Pacific islands as well. By combining vigorous marketing skills and distribution through research, Punja & Sons serves customers with a product portfolio of soap, rice, tea, flour, oil, and coconut products to dairy products and tissues.

The company's interests cover manufacturing, food processing, packaging, printing, distribution, import and export.

Punja Kara is no longer with us. But his guiding light continues to lead Punja & Sons, making it one of Fiji's most valuable corporate citizens - a conglomerate that not only plays a key role in the continuing growth and development of the nation's economy, but also helps sustains the livelihood of native communities in an increasingly competitive world.
